Car Directions: An excellent network of roads links Santander with the rest of Spain, the Spanish Costa’s and Portugal. Take the N634 westwards along the coast towards Coruna, and eastwards towards Bilbao. The N611 goes south to Valladolid and the N623 links the ferry port with Burgos.

Rail Directions: RENFE is the national railway system and has links to almost every town in Spain.
Planning Ahead
Places of Interest: Elegant, picuresque Santander is typical of North Spain and offers excellent beaches, splendid view points, fine museums and galleries, and a bustling market. Santander is in a beautiful setting, backed by open countryside and dramatic mountains. For cutural interest there is the Museo Provincial de Prehistoria, which exhibits finds from the area’s prehistorically inhabited caves.

Food: There is a huge choice of cafés, bars and restaurants in the centre, around the Puerto Pesquero (fishing port), and at El Sardinero. If you prefer a picnic, or cook yourself, there is a good food market behind the Ayuntamiento.
